Open practice
Jams: the room is the teacher.
A jam is where Contact Improvisation actually lives. No instructor, no set music, no obligation to dance with anyone. You arrive, you listen, you move, you leave.
A Contact Improvisation (CI) jam is an open, unguided session where people practise Contact Improvisation together. There is no teacher and usually no music. Participants arrive and leave freely, dance with whoever is willing, sit at the edge to rest and watch, and stop at any time. Jams are the primary way the form is practised worldwide, and in Miami they sit alongside a small number of recurring classes and festival camps.
Recurring sessions in Miami we have verified
Each of these was checked against the organiser's own page on the date shown. Schedules change, so confirm before you travel. Nothing on this list is paid for, sponsored, or added without the organiser's own page saying it.
Contact Improv — ALL LEVELS · Contact Improvisation
Dance Arts Miami, 250 NE 61st Street, Miami, FL 33137
Weekly, Tuesdays 6:00–7:00 PM EDT; the Meetup listing states the recurrence runs to 28 February 2027. $22 for a first class on Eventbrite, $30 on Meetup and SweatPals.
The most established recurring Contact Improvisation class found in Miami-Dade. Published on Eventbrite by Esther Frances & Dmitry Krasnyanskiy and hosted at Dance Arts Miami. Advertised as exploring connection, weight sharing, momentum and spontaneous partnering, with no partner needed, and mirrored on Meetup and SweatPals. The three listings disagree with each other, so read the one you are actually booking through: a first class is $22 on Eventbrite and $30 on Meetup and SweatPals, and refunds run to 7 days before the event on Eventbrite while SweatPals states none. Dance Arts Miami's own schedule page carried no contact improvisation entry when it was opened, so this class is verified through its Eventbrite, Meetup and SweatPals listings rather than the studio's own site, and the current week is always worth confirming there.

Kama Flight — Flight Workshop · Contact-adjacent (acro yoga, Thai massage, Contact Improvisation)
Skanda Yoga, 1800 SW 1st Ave #102, Miami, FL 33129
October 18, 2026 and November 15, 2026, 3:00–4:30 PM on both dates. $50, sold as a partner pair (admission for two).
Described by the organisers as a fusion of acro yoga, Thai massage and Contact Improvisation, and as a new partner wellness modality built on the neuroscience of play and connection. Proceeds fund the Kama Flight Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Booked in pairs with friends welcome, which makes it a gentler first step than an open jam if physical contact with strangers is the thing giving you pause. One thing we could not resolve: both the October and the November product pages render an 'Add to cart' control and also the words 'Sold Out', so treat availability as unclear and ask info@kamaflight.com before planning around either date.

Kama Flight — jams · Contact-adjacent (acro yoga, Thai massage, Contact Improvisation)
Private residence, 2345 N Bay Rd, Miami Beach, FL 33140
Most recent published Miami jam: 8 September 2026, 6:30–9:00 PM. No later Miami date was published when we checked.. Donation, with $10, $20 and $30 offered as suggested amounts, booked in advance.
Recurring donation-based jams at a private residence, which has to be booked in advance and is why the exact address is confirmed to ticket holders. The organiser's own jams collection listed exactly one Miami jam when it was opened, dated 8 September 2026 and therefore already past, with no next Miami date published beside it. That is why this entry carries its date instead of being presented as a running session: check the organiser's page for the next one rather than trusting any list, including this one.

Camp Contact at Love Burn · Contact Improvisation (as a core camp offering)
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, 4020 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami, FL 33149
February, annually. Festival ticket.
Love Burn is Miami's Burning Man regional, held on Virginia Key, and Camp Contact runs contact improvisation, acro yoga, ecstatic dance, tai chi, massage and authentic relating as its programme. The camp's own page states that the camp loves 'Contact Improvisation Dance, Acro Yoga, Ecstatic Dance, Tai Chi, Massage, Hugs, and Authentic Relating'. This is the largest concentration of contact improvisation that happens in Miami in a year, and it is a festival rather than a class. The page prints the dates 5-8 February without printing the year beside them, while its own countdown points at early February 2027, so read the page directly rather than treating a month and a day from this site as a confirmed booking date.

Ecstatic Dance Miami — Full Moon Immersion · Contact-adjacent (ecstatic dance, with a Contact Improv component the listing advertises). Not a CI jam.
Exact venue not published by the organiser. The listing names Hollywood Lakes, Hollywood, FL, and sends the location to ticket holders on the day.
Saturday 26 September 2026, 7:00–11:59 PM EDT. Monthly, on the full moon.. Not published on the pages we read; advance tickets only.
The organiser's own listing describes the evening as a monthly embodiment and healing experience through Contact Improv, ecstatic dance, tantra, aquatic healing work and sound healing, so contact improvisation is one part of a longer programme rather than the whole of it. The organiser states plainly that there are no tickets at the door and no drop-ins. Their site has been running since 2014 and gathers every full moon. The trade-off of carrying this entry is the one thing we cannot verify for you: the venue is deliberately withheld until a ticket is bought, so the county is Broward and the city is Hollywood, and nothing more specific is published for us to check.

Ecstatic Dance Fort Lauderdale · Contact-adjacent (ecstatic dance). Not Contact Improvisation, and the listing makes no CI claim.
Le Sound Temple, 2501 NE 30th St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306
Monthly, first Saturday of the month, 7:30–9:30 PM with doors at 7:00 PM. The only dated gathering the listing names is its inaugural, 5 September 2026.. $33.
An evening of cacao, breathwork, ecstatic dance and a closing sound bath, carried on ecstaticdance.org, the global conscious-dance directory, in the organiser's own words. It is listed here because it is the clearest recurring movement gathering in Broward County that could be verified at all, and because no contact improvisation jam in Broward could be found to list instead. It is not contact improvisation, and this site will not imply otherwise. The venue's own events page publishes sound baths and breathwork but not this dance, so the directory listing above is the source to check.

Miami Contact Improv — Friday Jam · Contact Improvisation
Inner Motion Dance Studio, 216 NE 1st Ave, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009
Weekly, Fridays 7:00–9:00 PM, from Friday 2 October 2026. $20 to $40 online on a sliding scale, $15 when you share it or come for the first time, or $30 to $50 at the door, pay what you can.
The one session this site runs itself. It is hosted by Max Petrusenko, who also maintains miamicontactimprov.com, so the disclosure comes first: this entry is the organiser describing his own jam, on the same terms as every other entry on this page and ranked no higher for it. An open, all-levels Contact Improvisation jam with a short opening circle, a warm-up and open dancing until nine; no partner and no experience needed, and no booking, you come to the door. The studio is on the north edge of Miami, in Hallandale Beach, just past Aventura on US-1. Inner Motion Dance Studio's own public schedule did not yet show this session when it was opened on the checked date, so the source linked here is this site's own page for the jam, which is where the schedule is kept current.

Contact Improv — Fundamentals · Contact Improvisation
Inner Motion Dance Studio, 216 NE 1st Ave, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009
Eight Fridays, 7:00–9:00 PM, from Friday 2 October 2026 to Friday 20 November 2026. $20 to $40 online on a sliding scale, $15 when you share it or come for the first time, or $30 to $50 at the door, pay what you can.
Run by the same maintainer as the Friday jam, and the disclosure comes first: it is taught by Max Petrusenko, who also maintains miamicontactimprov.com, so this entry is the organiser describing his own class, on the same terms as every other entry on this page and ranked no higher for it. Eight weekly classes on the fundamentals of the form, 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Inner Motion Dance Studio on the north edge of Miami: giving and taking weight, a rolling point of contact, falling, momentum, consent, and small dances that build toward an open score. Each class ends with an open dance, and you can drop into any of the eight, with no partner and no experience needed. Registration runs through Luma, subscribers to the monthly email get 20% off for the next two months, and payment at the door is accepted at every class. The series ends on 20 November 2026, so this entry comes down with it rather than sitting here looking current.

How to check a listing is still current
Miami has no central CI calendar, so "is there a jam tonight?" has no static answer and a page like this one goes stale the moment a room or a schedule changes. Every session above carries the date its source was last opened and read; the third-party listings were last re-checked on 14 September 2026. Treat an old date as a lead to check rather than a fact.
Three things settle it. Open the organiser's own page or account, which is the only authoritative source and is linked from each entry. Look for a date of its own: a recurring session whose source has not been posted to in months has usually stopped, and an undated listing is evidence of nothing. Then ask, by direct message, before travelling to a session — organisers answer, and they would rather tell you than have you arrive at a locked door.
What this page will not do is guess. A stale listing published as current is worse than an empty one, so an entry comes down when its source goes quiet, and a session nobody could verify is never presented as running.
How a jam usually runs
Formats vary, but most jams follow a recognisable shape.
Arrival. People change, stretch, greet each other, and find a place on the floor. Someone who is hosting opens a circle.
The circle. Two or three minutes. The host states the protocol: consent is continuous, you may decline anything, the edge is for resting, and here is where the water is. Anyone may add a boundary or announce something, such as an injury or that they are leaving early.
Warm-up. Often a short guided sequence, then a few minutes of small dance: standing still and following the body's micro-adjustments. If there is a teacher present, they may offer twenty minutes of material before the open dancing begins.
The open jam. The long middle. Dances start with a look, a hand, or simply the two of you already moving. They end when either partner stops. Resting at the edge between dances is normal.
Closing. Some jams end with a circle, a moment of stillness, or nothing at all. People drift out.
What is expected of you
- Keep the contact point singular. Two hands and a hip at once is grappling, not CI.
- Keep your own feet available. If you cannot land, you cannot safely take weight.
- Roll out of falls rather than bracing. The floor is the biggest partner in the room.
- Say no when you mean no, and accept no without asking why.
- Leave the dance when it is over, including mid-phrase, without apologising.
- Do not teach unless you were asked to. A jam is not a class.
What to bring
| Clothing | Loose, opaque, covers back, shoulders and knees. No zips, buckles or rough seams |
|---|---|
| Feet | Bare or soft non-slip socks. No shoes on the floor |
| Water | A full bottle. The floor is hot and humid in Miami |
| Towel | One. You will need it |
| Jewellery | Leave it off. Rings, watches and necklaces catch and cut |
| Phone | Silenced, face down, off the floor or at the edge |
Spotters and safety
Sessions where lifts are circulating often keep one or two people outside the dance as spotters: standing close, hands free, watching for a fall that needs slowing. It is one of the few roles in a jam that is technical rather than social, and new dancers are usually welcome to learn it. If you are not sure whether you can safely take someone's weight, you cannot, and saying so is the correct answer.
Before and after your first visit
What actually happens when you walk in — arriving, the opening circle, the first ten minutes of dancing, the lines you can say when you want to stop and when to leave — is on your first jam, step by step. What to do in the weeks after it, including the weeks when nothing is running, is on keep practising.
Questions about jams
What is a Contact Improvisation jam?
A jam is an open, unguided Contact Improvisation session. There is no teacher and little or no music. People arrive, dance with one or more partners or alone, rest at the edge, and leave when they are done. It is the basic social form of Contact Improvisation.
What is the difference between an open jam and a closed jam?
An open jam accepts anyone, including first-timers. A closed, experienced or advanced jam assumes prior practice, usually because the dancing moves fast and relies on shared safety habits. Listings should state which one it is.
How do I find a jam in Miami?
Miami's CI scene is organised by individuals rather than an institution, so sessions appear through studio calendars, social posts and word of mouth rather than one central box office. This page lists the sessions we have confirmed, and the directory lists the studios and organisers worth asking.
Is there a jam tonight in Miami?
This site does not publish a live calendar, so it cannot answer that reliably. The most current source is the organiser's own listing or social account. If you run a recurring session and tell us the schedule, we will add it.
Do jams cost money?
Usually a small door fee or a donation to cover the room, set by the organiser. Free community jams exist. Nobody should be turned away from a first jam without being told the cost in advance.
Run a jam?
Tell us the schedule, the room and the door fee and we will list it. This page exists to be corrected by the people who are actually in the room.
